A HIKE IN TAXI FARES APPROVED BY COUNCIL

Members of the council’s licensing and general purposes committee voted in favour of an increase in prices, effective from March 31 2010.
Following a month-long consultation, councillors agreed to implement the new set of tariffs at a meeting yesterday.
The decision follows a rise in road tax, fuel and general costs in recent years.
Other changes to set fees, include fouling of a vehicle, which will be a charge of up to £70, a 50p fee for each animal carried and 3 per cent of the total fare for payment made by credit or debit card. Suggestions received during the consultation to charge 40p per receipt for customers and allow taxi firms to use Tariff 2 from 2000 were rejected. Isle of Wight Council cabinet member for licensing Cllr Barry Abraham said:
The majority of people who responded during the consultation did agree maximum taxi fares should be increased, and we received more responses from the public than the trade.
The new fares, and the times they will be in use, are as follows:
TARIFF 1 (0800 – 2200)
£3.00 for the first half a mile (instead of the first mile, which currently relates to each tariff) then 40p every subsequent quarter mile. Waiting time every minute will be 40p and taxis should use Tariff 2 when carrying more than four passengers.
TARIFF 2 (6am-8am and 10pm-midnight)
£4.50 for the first half mile then 60p every subsequent quarter mile. Waiting time every minute will be 60p & taxis should use Tariff 3 when carrying more than four passengers.
TARIFF 3 (Midnight-6am and used on Christmas Day, Boxing Day and Easter Sunday)
£6.00 for the first half a mile or part of a mile then 80p every subsequent quarter of a mile. Waiting time every minute will be 80p and taxis should use Tariff 4 when carrying more than four passengers.
TARIFF 4 (12am-6am, Christmas Day, Boxing Day & Easter Sunday. Only applies to vehicles able to seat 5 – 8 passengers & used when carrying more than 4 passengers)
£7.50 for the first half a mile or part of a mile then £1 every subsequent quarter of a mile. Waiting time every minute will be £1 and taxis should use Tariff 4 when carrying more than four passengers.
